The Big Day!!

Today is going to be such a fantastic day!

After breakfast and/or a light lunch, we are getting married at St. Nikolaus church in Etzelwang at around 1pm. Afterwards, we shall all travel to the reception venue in Oed for afternoon tea, WEDDING CAKE and other treats. Yum scrum!

A little while after we will have a spot of german tradition where the bridesmaids and girlfriends kidnap the bride. It is up to the groom along with some friends, usually the best man to find her and perform some funny forfeits to get his new wife back! They can usually be found at a pub in a nearby town drinking champagne which the groom will have to pay for!! Needless to say that the groom and his friends will also have to stop a few times in their searching endeavours to make sure they keep up their strength for all the fun and games.

After retrieving the wife, all shall return to Oed for more champagne, supper, music and games, lots of laughs and a midnight buffet to help us all continue partying into the wee hours. HOORAY!!

Wedding Eve Plans

The Friday before the wedding is a very important day!

In the afternoon, we will be married at the registry office in Neukirchen so that we are registered by the state prior to our church wedding. This is normal in Germany as the church is separate from the government, thus we have to be married in the eyes of the church, as well as in the eyes of the law.

We will celebrate this with a hog roast supper at Annemarie and Helmut's house in Erkelsdorf. If you have already arrived by this time, join us for a scrumptious feast, oodles of drink and get to know everyone and have fun!

About the Place and People

If you decide to come over earlier to enjoy the beautiful bavarian countryside, that is fantastic. It is well worth the extra time, as the nearby historic town of Nuremberg is well worth a visit.

The area in and around Neukirchen is set in beautiful open countryside with fantastic cycling and walking opportunities. There are caves, hills and forests to explore, in addition to being well placed to visit towns such as Amberg, Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Stuttgart, Regensburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, all places famous for their historic significance and architecture.

The whole area is rather charming and the people are friendly and welcoming. It is an agricultural part of Germany, very traditional in its views and operations. For instance, shops, restaurants and hotels will close for lunch and finish the day by six o'clock. Conversely, they open for business a lot earlier than in England with bakeries opening from before seven o'clock in the morning.

People in the area all know each other and have so for generations. It is common to greet one another upon entering shops or when meeting on the street. Please expect that you will stick out and people will look at you and ask questions as to where you come from, why you're here and how long you'll stay. It won't be meant in a derogatory or rude way, it is just that people will be curious and want to know more about you.

Towns like Amberg or Nuremberg are much more anonymous and have a nightlife. Nearer to than both is Sulzbach-Rosenberg, which has some 'younger' pubs and a cinema. People in the area either travel or see their friends in local pubs or at their homes for entertainment.

Hope this helps you all get a feel for the place.

Invitations

We're writing invitations at the moment and we should be able to post them by next week. Really excited!

We still need some addresses and as we're writing the invitations, my hand is getting a work out. If you get a slightly wonky invite, please don't be offended, it just means I got cramp.

If you open the envelope carefully, there might even be a little surprise inside!

Dress

I've got a dress and it's so pretty!

Janey, Marga, Baby Alex and I went last Tuesday afternoon and found a lovely wedding dress - yay!

Lisa had found a great one online and so we decided to check it out - sadly that dress was not right, it was a bit too booby for church... Dress number two was better, but a bit plain... and then I tried on dress number three, which I wasn't initially convinced about.

I don't want to give too much away, but after some tweaks, dress number three was the one! Hurrah!!!

I'll give you a hint - when we were at lunch, we spotted Mika at the next table. :-)

Bridesmaids and Best Man

Neil will be Best Man and I'll have three bridesmaids. Is that excessive?

Even if it is, I don't mind! My bridesmaids will be the lovely Jane Ludford (Chief), Margarita Vidiella and Florence Worley.

We met through working at Datamonitor back in 2000 and have been friends ever since. Both Marga and Flo have beat me to the punch in getting married before me and both of them are mums as well! Marga recently had baby number two, Alexander, so that baby number one, Olivia, has someone to show the ropes to. Flo has lovely Annabelle, who is also my godchild, so it will be extra special that she can be there for the wedding.

We're currently looking for bridesmaid dresses, but I'm determined not to be a pariah and make everyone wear horrible poofy frilly dresses in terrible colours like brown and purple. I want them to look and feel beautiful!

I will need Phil to write more about Neil and all his friends! On the men front, we are considering getting all of them to wear traditional bavarian lederhosen for the ceremony.

Things are moving!

We've been to Germany for a quick trip and did lots of organising in the three days we were there.

We've got a date: Saturday, 24th October 2009
We've got a venue: Gasthof Zur Traube in Oed, Germany
We've got the church: St Nikolaus zu Etzelwang, Germany

Hurrah!
